Larry Derfner: Congress Shows Lack of Leverage With Aid Threat
As an Israeli who sees the occupation as a plague both on Palestinians and on Israelis, I think it’s a good thing that Congress just held back $200 million in economic aid to the Palestinians as punishment for their statehood bid at the United Nations. It’s a good thing, because now that the Republican Party (and much of the Democratic Party) is indistinguishable from Likud USA, American involvement only makes the Israeli-Palestinian conflict worse, so the less influence America has over here, the better. And the withholding of the $200 million gives the United States even less influence over the Palestinians than it had after President Obama, at Israel’s behest, did them in at the United Nations.
De Israëlische Larry Derfner maakt in een provocatieve blogpost het logische duidelijk: nu de VS haar economische hulp aan de palestijnen stopzet, verliest ze nog meer invloed in de gebieden die ze had kunnen gebruiken, for good or evil. Uiteindelijk is geld invloed. Nu de geldkraan is dichtgedraaid heeft de VS nog minder onderhandelingsinvloed dan ze al had op het conflict.
Daarnaast beïnvloed geld ook de mentaliteit. Een hypothetische stelling van een leek (w.b.t. internationale politiek en geschiedenis), zou het mogelijk zijn geweest voor de VS om, door het strategisch aan de Palestijnen besteden van grote hoeveelheden geld, om ze zo te laten verwesteren?
Disclaimer: Ik ben het niet per sé eens met het sentiment hierboven en met de gelinkte blogpost. Ik vind de beschrijving van het strategische mechanisme voornamelijk interessant.
